About the role
The Vehicle Design Team supports the hardware design and development of Electron, Photon and related Payload and Mission objectives.
  
The Vehicle Design team works closely with other Engineering teams and Production to bring new concepts to life. This includes the development of our vehicle and spacecraft systems using modern PLM infrastructure to support the manufacturing and performance improvement of Electron and Space Systems.
  
As a Vehicle Design Engineer at Rocket Lab, you will be strongly influencing the design of the world's first mass-produced orbital launch vehicle. Given the high launch cadence of Electron, you will have unparalleled opportunities for end-to-end hardware development and seeing your designs reach space.
  
Success in this position will be measured by the knowledge and experience in design and manufacturing that you bring into this role, your ability to lead design projects without supervision, successful collaboration with other teams, and the skilful prioritisation of competing engineering development projects across the group.
  
Essential skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Aerospace/Mechanical/Mechatronics Engineering)
  • 5+ years working experience in Design Engineering
  • NX CAD experience essential
  • Demonstrated ability to make good engineering decisions and manage multiple projects with competing priorities
  • Creative, analytical, good at problem solving
  • Ability to work on own initiative with ability to plan own daily workflow to meet higher level tasks
  • Demonstrated skills at collaborating in design development across a number of teams
  • Able to identify engineering challenges, provide feedback, and implement a solution to improve cost, quality, reliability, and/or delivery before it happens
  • Ability to mentor Junior Engineers
  • Clear communication skills
  • Calm under pressure
Desirable
Experience in one of the following areas:
  • Pressurised mechanical systems
  • Mechanical moving assemblies
  • Composites structures
  • Cryogenic systems including oxygen service systems
