About the role
The Senior Legal Counsel will deliver fit for purpose legal services that enable Rocket Lab to be successful.  In a legal context, this means, enabling Rocket Lab to perform its functions, duties and powers and manage its legal risks lawfully and effectively.

This role will suit someone who thrives in a dynamic environment, you will have a diverse range of responsibilities daily that could include reviewing software licencing, reviewing and drafting contracts for our suppliers and managing our IP portfolio.   You will work with external counsel on Trademarks & patents, these could include R&D processes or a new engine design! 
The Senior Legal Counsel may advise on disputes practicing commercial or property law or could be required to assist with employee relations or immigration matters.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Negotiates commercial agreements and transactions (including R&D agreements, NDAs, software licenses, supplier agreements etc)
  • Experience leading proposals, support RFQ/RFP processes and negotiating agreements for the New Zealand Procurement function.
  • Support all property matters including commercial leasing and constructions contracts.
  • Provide legal support in line with NZ legislation for international transactions.
  • Manage external counsel relationships for briefed out legal matters on an ad hoc basis (corporate, employment, intellectual property etc).
  • Lead litigation/disputes liaise with internal stakeholders and provide regular updates to senior management.
  • Improve and implement processes for legal operations.
  • Communicates commercial and legal risks to senior management and multiple stakeholders both in NZ and US and develop mitigation plans.
  • Support all areas of the business as a central function, provide training and support as needed.
  • Law Degree and must be eligible to hold a NZ practising certificate.
  • 8+ years’ work experience in contract management discipline. Ideally in government and or commercial and international transactions.
  • Aerospace or commercial space experience a benefit.
  • Must be able to multi-task and be able to work in time-crunch situations if required for conducting negotiations, meeting deadlines, proposals, meeting preparations, and customer interface.
  • Knowledge of standard contract practices: Intellectual property, commercial and corporate law, and various contract types (Firm Fixed Price, Time and Material).
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to build key relationships with internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to move between looking at the detail (analytical thinking) and looking at the big picture aims (strategic thinking)
