About The Role

About the role
You will be joining the Launch Safety & Regulatory Affairs group at an exciting time of growth and development. The work you do will form the basis of how systems safety engineering will be perceived at Rocket Lab and as such you must be experienced in leading multi-disciplinary hazard analysis meetings. Reporting to the Launch Safety & Regulatory Affairs Manager, you will be part of a team that produces and delivers the safety evidence for a wide range of regulatory bodies including New Zealand WorkSafe, US FAA and US Range Safety Authorities. 

Key responsibilities include:
  • Identification and management of safety hazards and risks associated with the launch vehicle and its supporting equipment and facilities.
  • Working with design engineers and facility managers in order to elicit safety requirements based your safety analysis.
  • Ensuring regulatory requirements flow into system and facility designs.
  • Ensuring the Hazard Log / Database remains current with design and facility changes.
  • Ensuring the regulatory safety submissions remains current with the safety analysis.
  • Mentoring of more junior staff.
Key skills we are looking for:
  • Practitioner in safety analysis techniques such as Hazard Identification, Fault Tree Analysis, Event Tree Analysis, HAZOP Studies, Functional Safety Analysis, FMECA and Risk Assessments.
  • Practitioner in identifying design safety requirements.
  • Safety compliance management.
  • Safety hazard / risk database management.
  • Creator of safety documentation e.g. safety management plans, safety case reports, ground safety plans, range safety reports.
  • Knowledge of safety legislation e.g. NZ HSWA, US OSHA, UK HSAW.
Highly desirable skills / experience
  • Experience in assessing safety integrity of programmable electronics (software, FPGAs) through a recognised standard e.g. IEC 61508, ISO 26262, IEC 62279, IEC 61511, IEC 61513, IEC 62061, DO-178C.
  • Range / Trials / Defence experience e.g. DoD 3200.11, RCC 321-17, AFSPCMAN 91-710, WSMR Range Safety Manual, KMR Range Safety Manual, MIL-STD 882, Def Stan 00-56.
  • Launch vehicle experience and working with FAA Launch Licensing, Code of Federal Regulations, NZ Outer Space Act, RCC 319-14.
  • Experience in the development of safe operational procedures.
  • Experience in the production of emergency response plans and procedures.
