Rocket Lab is looking for a Principal Structural Analyst to join their expanding team of engineers working on the Electron Launch Vehicle.   This is an opportunity to be part of the most the most exciting engineering project currently being undertaken in New Zealand.

Leading the analysis team, you will play an important role in managing the team’s output as well as performing analysis on key structural components.

Key duties include-
  • Perform, validate, and document structural analyses of primary and secondary launch vehicle structures, including
    • Finite element model verification and validation
    • Material selection
    • Performance trade-off studies
    • Mass optimization
  • Perform dynamic simulations (modal, random vibration, shocker response, transient)
  • Post-process and interpret static and dynamic ground test and flight data
  • Conduct reviews of analyses
  • Team management
  • Work closely with design and test engineers to iterate through design concepts, determine test requirements, and demonstrate positive structural margins
  • Provide vision, leadership, planning, project coordination and strong people leadership to the Structural Analyst team
Essential Skills required for the Principle Structural Analyst Position
  • 10+ years’ experience
  • Demonstrated expertise with one or more industry standard structural FEA packages: ANSYS, Abaqus, Nastran, Optistruct/Hyperworks
  • Demonstrated expertise in accurate prediction of component life and structural margins, including Ductile metal failure, Composite failure, Fatigue, Fracture, Linear and non-linear buckling (particularly shell buckling)
  • Experience with dynamic analysis, specifically with random vibration and shock response
  • Experience using Solidworks CAD and PDM packages (or comparable industry standard packages) with emphasis on model interrogation and defeaturing for subsequent analyses
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes, including conventional machining, additive manufacturing, and composites (prepreg autoclave and OOA)
  • Experience with mechanical systems in a relevant field (e.g. aerospace, automotive, marine)
Desirable skills-
  • Previous Team Management experience
  • Demonstrated expertise with one or more industry standard CFD packages: Fluent, CFX, STAR-CCM+
  • Experience in structural analysis of composites (laminate design, joint design, materials characterization, environmental effects)
  • Familiarity with non-linear material simulation, including metal plasticity, elastomers, and adhesive joints
  • Experience with vibroacoustic modelling/analysis
  • Familiarity with industry standards (e.g. MIL-STD-1540, GSFC-STD-7000, ECSS-E-HB-32, NASA-STD-5001)
  • Experience with static and dynamic structural test methods (strain gauges, accelerometers, experimental modal analysis, shaker table testing).
