About The Role

About Rocket Lab
Rocket Lab is the global leader in small satellite launch. Our mission is to open access to space to improve life on Earth. There are endless possibilities for what we can achieve with better access to space, and that access is now a reality thanks to Rocket Lab. Our team is 500 people strong and we’re adding to it every week. Collaboration is at our core - every idea is heard, and everyone makes a difference. Teams are nimble, decisions are made quickly, and we are action-oriented.
While other companies talk about it, we do it!
About the role
The Vehicle Design team works closely with other Engineering teams and Production to bring new concepts to life. This includes the development of our vehicle and space craft systems, related data structures and documentation to support the manufacturing and performance improvement of Electron and related Space Systems.

As a Principal Design Engineer at Rocket Lab, you will be strongly influencing the design of the world's first mass-produced orbital launch vehicle. Given the high launch cadence of Electron, you will have unparalleled opportunities for end-to-end hardware development and seeing your designs reach space.
In addition, you will play a leading role in the development of major sub-systems of Neutron, covering various structural and mechanical systems of the rocket

Success in this position will be measured by the value of the knowledge and experience in design and manufacturing that you bring into this role, your ability to lead design projects without supervision, successful collaboration with other teams across Rocket Lab, and the skilful prioritisation of competing engineering development projects across the group.
Essential skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Aerospace/Mechanical/Mechatronics Engineering)
  • 10+ years working experience in Engineering, including experience in one of the following areas
    • o Pressurised mechanical systems
    • o Mechanical moving assemblies
    • o Composites structures
    • o Cyrogenic systems including oxygen service systems
  • Proven experience developing full design solutions for significant structural and mechanical systems in aerospace or related field
  • Creative, analytical, good at problem solving
  • Ability to work on own initiative with ability to plan own daily workflow to meet higher level tasks
  • Clear communication skills
  • Calm under pressure
As well as a being a career-defining role, working at Rocket Lab means being part of meaningful projects with world-leading experts.
Collaboration is at our core - every idea is heard, and everyone makes a difference.
We get things done. Our team is nimble, decisions are made quickly, and we are action oriented. While other companies talk about it, we do it. This means projects get the green light faster and ideas are put into practice rapidly.
Everyone works on the big stuff. This isn’t a huge aerospace company where you get lost in bureaucracy and end up a tiny cog in a giant machine. At Rocket Lab, your work directly impacts the success of each mission. Everyone’s voice is heard, and everyone can contribute major projects. This is your chance to play a pivotal role in developing space systems that change the way we access space.
