About The Role

About Rocket Lab
Rocket Lab is the global leader in small satellite launch. Our mission is to open access to space to improve life on Earth. There are endless possibilities for what we can achieve with better access to space, and that access is now a reality thanks to Rocket Lab. Our team is 500 people strong and we’re adding to it every week. Collaboration is at our core - every idea is heard, and everyone makes a difference. Teams are nimble, decisions are made quickly, and we are action oriented.
While other companies talk about it, we do it!
About the role
Rocket Lab seeks a Mechanical Systems Architect to help build the Neutron platform: Rocket Lab’s medium lift, reusable launch vehicle capable of human spaceflight.

As a Mechanical Systems Architect, you will guide a set of multi-disciplinary teams to align Neutron’s portfolio of human certified mechanical systems with the program’s strategy; functional, performance, and safety requirements; and technical maturity phases.
Systems Architects combine technical excellence with strengths in technical planning and communication.
Key responsibilities
  • Work closely with design engineers to rapidly assess conceptual designs, perform system trade studies, develop integrated design solutions, formulate system margin strategy and performance parameters
  • Develop a mechanical concept of operations that clearly describes the system’s performance and functions
  • Define and document system-level mechanical architecture, such as redundancy, fault tolerance, interoperability etc.
  • Establish and guide system level technical budgets, and create technical performance metrics to track system objectives throughout the program
  • Actively contribute to technical decision making including conceptual, preliminary, and critical design, test readiness, change management, and risk reviews.
  • Proactively identify and solve technical challenges to allow projects to proceed at pace.
  • Mentor and technically assist other engineers
Essential skills
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Engineering (or equivalent experience)
  • 7+ year’s industry experience in the design, development, and test of mechanical systems in a relevant technical field (i.e., Structures, Fluid Systems, Mechanisms, Propulsion)
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering complex multidisciplinary systems with hardware, embedded software, application software and mechanical components
  • Proven track record of technical leadership and mentorship on projects from concept to completion.
  • Proven communication skills and the ability to build strong working relationships with colleagues and engineering professionals
  • The ability to work to tight deadlines within a high-pressure environment
  • Strong desire to learn new material to solve difficult, ambiguous challenges.
Desirable skills
  • Experience with fault-tolerance strategies and architectures for safety and mission critical systems
  • Strong understanding of quality management such as standards, regulations and applicable policies and procedures such as information, change and configuration management
  • Experience with MIL-STD/DO-160/SMC-S-016 environmental qualification testing
  • Experience in Systems Engineering tools e.g., Rhapsody, DOORS, Jama
  • Familiarity with applicable Electrical standards: i.e., MIL-STD-981
